Drug Use Among Students
It’s important for students and athletes to maintain proper health in order to succeed, and drug abuse can significantly hinder this. While efforts made have helped our society achieve a decrease in the number of teens and students who use drugs and alcohol over the past four decades, there are still occurrences that must be addressed. One solution is to implement a reliable drug testing program to ensure students stay safe and healthy.
Monitoring the Future reports statistics based on a 2012 survey:
DRUG USE IN 8TH GRADERS OVER THE PAST YEAR
LIFETIME DRUG USE IN 8TH GRADERS
DRUG USE IN 10TH GRADERS OVER THE PAST YEAR
LIFETIME DRUG USE IN 10TH GRADERS
DRUG USE IN 12TH GRADERS OVER THE PAST YEAR
LIFETIME DRUG USE IN 12TH GRADERS
What Does This Mean?
Whether or not we like it, kids must grow up and learn to make important decisions, and they are likely to face the choice to experiment with drugs. A survey conducted in 2012 monitored 8th, 10th, and 12th graders, and it reported that over 10 percent of eighth grade students and around 50 percent of 12th graders have engaged in one type of illicit drug use or another.
Furthermore, students who participate in sports have a lot of pressure put on them. Aside from being pushed to maintain good grades, they also have to engage in serious physical exertion. This can entice them to use performance enhancing drugs like steroids.
Although we don’t like to think these things occur, they do, and schools must have a plan in place to prevent drug use. The staff here at ARCpoint Labs has the combination of tools and experience to implement the proper protocols to both identify problems and correct them.
