Avuncular DNA Test
Paternity or maternity can be determined through the Avuncular DNA. This test uses the DNA of a sibling of the alleged parent, that is, an aunt or uncle of the child in whose parentage is in question. Aunt or Uncle DNA testing determines the probability that an individual is the biological aunt or uncle of a child. An avuncular test is another way, though less precise and certain, to determine parentage. It is useful when the alleged parent is not available or deceased.
ARCpoint Labs of Austin, TX North recommends testing the available parent(s) of the child in question. If a child’s parent is unavailable, an avuncular DNA test can still be performed with an alternate DNA sample (hair, toothbrush, etc.) for a court-admissible DNA test.
Alternative Methods for Proving Paternity
Unlike a DNA paternity test, which provides a relationship result, avuncular DNA tests determines the genetic profile of the alleged relatives. This creates the “avuncular index.” When the avuncular index is greater than 1.00, it is more likely that the tested individuals are true biological relatives. When the avuncular index is less than 1.00, it is established that no relationship exists.
