Fentanyl’s Deadly Effects
Heroin and powerful prescription drugs are no longer the most dangerous substance — fentanyl, a potent cancer treatment, is now being made illegally and sold as another means of getting high
This adds to what was already a large problem nationwide, prescription painkiller abuse, which has gotten worse with the emergence of new opioid-based medications.
Modern Fentanyl: More Common, More Potent
Typically found in a patch or lozenge form (since the 19602), fentanyl is now being produced in pill or powder form. This way, it is more potent — 50 times more powerful than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine — it also carries a number of dangerous side effects, including respiratory arrest, overdose and even death.
Many fentanyl-related deaths have occurred because Fentanyl-related deaths are rising across the nation, and many occur because drug dealers lace other prescription painkillers with fentanyl. According to data from 2014:
- Ohio had a 452.69% increase
- Florida had a 114.59% increase
- Maryland had a 218.97% increase
A Dangerous Drug in Disguise
Counterfeit pills appear to be regular prescription medications, such as Xanax, when examined with the naked eye, but when tested are have been found to be fentanyl. This is perhaps the worst aspect of the drug.
Fentanyl can be easily ingested, just a deep breath or a sneeze could result in an overdose. It can also be absorbed via your skin or your eyes, so even touching just a small amount of fentanyl can be deadly.
